How it is spread: It is passed on genetically; It’s recessive and determined by two or more couples or genes. It’s also very influenced by life style and environment.
Symptoms: Pains and difficulty to move; a weird walk, that effects It’s resistance, muscles start to fail, and finally, snap noises during the joint exams. It may need surgery in some cases, or, in the worst case scenario the dog has to be put to sleep. Some dogs have to use wheel in place of the back paws, to be able to move. That’s why, in order to keep the problem from spreading, it’s necessary for everyone to take their dogs for a joint exam.
Prevention: First of all, It’s necessary to keep dogs with moderate and severe joint problems from reproducing, giving always priority to those dogs that don’t have the illness. When buying a puppy ask for an illness certificate from the father and the mother. Only one of the two can have the illness but lightly. This will give you more security, and the chances of buying a puppy with problems will be smaller, but not impossible. It’s recommended that the owner’s of the dogs that have more chance of having this illness to test their dogs before the time of reproduction, to make sure they know what they are doing.
