Joint Problems

TOP

BACK

Joint problems can occur, most of the time, between the hip and the back paws. It’s more common in big dogs of rapid growth, even though it can happen in every race. It happens in males and females with the same frequency, and it can affect one or two joints. It usually affects two.

How it is spread:

It is passed on genetically; It’s recessive and determined by two or more couples or genes. It’s also very influenced by life style and environment.

Symptoms:

Pains and difficulty to move; a weird walk, that effects It’s resistance, muscles start to fail, and finally, snap noises during the joint exams. It may need surgery in some cases, or, in the worst case scenario the dog has to be put to sleep. Some dogs have to use wheel in place of the back paws, to be able to move. Definitive diagnosis is only possible through x-rays after the 12th month of life.

Categories of the illness:

HD – (Category A): animal is not ill
HD – (Category B): almost normal joint
HD - (Category C): light joint problems
HD - (Category D): moderate joint problems
HD - (Category E): severe joint problems

Some people have dogs with different levels of joint problems and don’t even know that. Sometimes they think it’s “impossible” that the problem is happening with their dogs, because they can run, jump and move easily. That’s why, in order to keep the problem from spreading, it’s necessary for everyone to take their dogs for a joint exam.

Prevention:

First of all, It’s necessary to keep dogs with moderate and severe joint problems from reproducing, giving always priority to those dogs that don’t have the illness. When buying a puppy ask for an illness certificate from the father and the mother. Only one of the two can have the illness but lightly. This will give you more security, and the chances of buying a puppy with problems will be smaller, but not impossible. It’s recommended that the owner’s of the dogs that have more chance of having this illness to test their dogs before the time of reproduction, to make sure they know what they are doing.

Some small cares can better the joint problems on your dog:

Don’t give your puppy too much food, this will make him grow too fast, which may cause joint problems
Avoid obesity
Avoid some exercises when the dog is still too young or that might be too though on the dog, like making run along a bicycle or any other vehicle.
Avoid slippery floors
When a female dogs has puppies put them over a surface where they won’t slip and where they can move firmly. Be careful not to choose a material that may hurt the puppies.
After the first three months of life moderate exercises are recommended (swimming, light walks), with the objective of making It’s pelvic muscles stronger. (the only structure of soft tissue that helps in the management of the joints and that can become stronger, and bigger.)
The exam is made at the completion of 12 months on small dogs and 18 months on big dogs. It’s not very expensive (around R$ 50,00; Brazilian money), and will keep you and your dog confident. The dog can only drink water 8 hours before the exam, and it will be given a sedative to rela x it’s muscles. The owner must take a copy of the animal’s pedigree certificate. Note to the mommies: This exam is not recommended to pregnant dogs, because the puppies may be at risk, and it’s also not recommended for dogs that have had their puppies in the last thirty days, because it’s bone structure still hasn’t come back to normal (It modifies during the labor).
